Makin' Music With John Mayer
In case you have ever been curious about the creative process. John Mayer explains it all.
In case you have ever been curious about the creative process. John Mayer explains it all.
One of our local radio stations WTMD 89.7FM in Towson Maryland recently did a countdown of the top 897 albums of all time (89.7FM = Top 897 - Get it! radio people... ) anyway as a lover of lists in a list loving land I was enthralled.
The station solicited votes from listeners - we were encourage to send our top 10 albums of all time and the staffers, along with the help of a Cray XT-4 supercomputer would compile the list and Play it for us during the entire month of February.
It was a great month of radio and interesting to hear the diversity of recordings included in th list. Everything from Ella Fitzgerald to Public Enemy made the list. Here's the Top 25.
1. The Beatles - St. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
2. The Beatles The Beatles (aka The White Album)
3. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
4. The Beatles - Abbey Road
5. The Clash- London Calling |
6. Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run
7. U2 - The Joshua Tree
8. Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
9. The Who - Who's Next
10. The Beatles- Revolver
11. Led Zeppelin- Led Zeppelin IV
12. Radiohead - OK Computer
13. Paul Simon- Graceland
14. Rolling Stones- Exile On Main Street
15. Grateful Dead- American Beauty
16. Beatles- Rubber Soul
17. Neil Young- Harvest
18. Bob Dylan- Highway 61 Revisited
19. Nirvana- Nevermind
20. Counting Crows - August and Everything After
21. Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue
22. Fleetwood Mac - Rumors
23. Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced?
24. Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed
25. Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers None from the 21st Century. 3 from the 1990's 2 From the 80's 12 from the 70's 7 from the 60's and 1 - Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" from the 1950's, Which, by the way, is one of the most played around my house over the past 20 years. The first 21st Century release shows up at #33 Wilco - "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot". An album the Warner Music paid for TWICE. It's a great story. The top ranking Female artist album was at #36 "Blue" By Joni Mitchell. Now, I LOVE Joni, but I can hardly listen to those early records anymore. The air is thin up around those notes - it makes me dizzy. Personally, I would have "Court and Spark" - #99 - ranked highest among Joni albums followed by "Heijira" and Maybe even "Hissing of Summer Lawns" before I got to "Blue" Speaking of Women. Carole King's "Tapestry" a core element of every teen-aged girl's record collection in the 1970's ruled the charts for months. It show up here at number 46. This is where this list starts to smell fishy and the gloves come off. I'll start - Tapestry a greater album than "Tommy", "Axis Bold as Love" "Songs in the Key of Life" or "Hotel California" I don't THINK So! That's the fun part, debating favorites and defending personal tastes. Music is so personal, so powerful and so polarizing. Damn, I love it. Apparently so does my neighbor, Guy. He runs a consulting firm and is a big music fan too. Guy, however, is much more analytical than I and he took a far more complete and detailed look at this list. Check it out HERE. It's quite impressive and insightful. ...and when you've had enough insight. Come back here for more argument! Whaddda ya mean Devo "Freedom of Choice" is at # 876?? That is easily a Top 800 record! |
Hey Check this out - Courtesy of imeem.com, I have a special Guest DJ today - It's Ursula 1000 from ESL Music. Dig the groovy sounds kids!
The Full lineup for the 2 Day Virgin Mobile Music Festival at Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore MD was announced today. Full details on the event at their site.
Saturday - Previously announced headliners are Jack Johnson and Foo Fighters. My favorites among the new additions are:
WILCO - I have missed this band too many times. The Recher, the 9:30 Club, The Meyerhoff, Merriweather, no excuses this time. Woo-Hoo!
Gogol Bordello - The Gypsy Punks were on my wish list for last year - very excited to see this spectacle.
She and Him - The duo of M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel just released their first album. He is a virtuoso guitarist and you may know Zooey from the films Elf and Almost Famous among others. You can hear some of their bright and breezy music a their My Space page Some knucklehead put an auto starting video in the comments so stop that first or you'll be really confused.
Cat Power - Now that she has both sobered up and conquered her severe stage fright Chan Marshall AKA Cat Power is doing great shows.
The Offspring! Are you ready to MOSH? Here's your chance. A Tremendous live act, I will watch from a safe distance, I hurt my back, you see and the doc says no more Moshing for me.
Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings - The band that backed Amy Winehouse on Back to Black, this should be nice to groove and sway to...
Get this kids - CHUCK BERRY and the Silver Beats Yes, it's true - Chuck Berry a founding father of Rock and Roll is not only alive, but is playing at V-Fest. Wow.
Rodrigo y Gabriela - A brilliant guitar duo - He plays fast and linear with a pick and she plays flamenco style - born in Mexico and now based in Dublin, they will astound you.
SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY!!
Previously announced Headliners, Nine Inch Nails, Kanye West and the Re-united Stone Temple Pilots, PLUS:
Bob Dylan! - How does it Feeeeel? Pretty damn good, Bob. Thanks for asking.
Iggy and the Stooges! - The legendary Iggy Pop and the reunited Stooges were the talk of the festival circuit last summer. Psyched!
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Stomp Your feet and Clap your hands as BRMC kicks out the jams.
The Black Keys - Dynamic innovative intriguing and inspired.
Lil Wayne - Uh, he raps, I'm guessing.
Taking Back Sunday - This one's for the kids.
Citizen Cope - Local Boy makes good (Music)
The Swell Season - Duo Du Jour, as seen in the film Once.
The Go Team - OK you stumped me. They are probably great.
PLUS each Day the Dance Tent features world class DJ's including MOBY doing a set on Sunday.
Thank you again, Sir Richard Branson.
Now, Check out the Stooges Live at SXSW 2007.
Everyone loves a great mix tape. Creating a Mix Tape used to be a full evening's project. A stack of LP's or CD's a fresh cassette tape, a couple of beers and time - at least 2 hours for a 90 minute mix - often longer. Timing the start button and needle drop to make a tight mix sometime required multiuple attempts. If you later had regrets about putting Talking Heads before The Cure instead of vice-versa, tough. These were errors one learned to live with, starting over was a just to great an undertaking.
Now, making a Mix CD is an easy drag and drop process. You can shuffle the songs around, think about it, add and drop, tweak it and burn it. Get a better idea tomorrow and it takes just minutes to drop a track, add a track and burn again. It's wonderful.
The Joy of Mix has evolved yet again with Muxtape.com. Here you upload 12 songs, sequence them to perfection and invite your friends to listen. Your mix will also reach the ears of random listeners, some of whom will be amazed by your talent for putting together a perfect mix. Browsing and listening to the mixes of others is a lot of fun. Check it out at Muxtape.com You can go directly to my latest Muxtape by clicking HERE Then let me know and I'll make sure to listen to your labor of love. Mux On!
Here we go - The first announcement for this year's Virgin Mobile Festival at Pimlico Race Track, Baltimore, Maryland on August 9th and 10th. With many more to be announced soon - So far we will be rocking with... Drum roll Please.......
Foo Fighters
Nine Inch Nails
Jack Johnson - I hope he brings Curious George along!
Kanye West
The suddenly reformed and touring Stone Temple Pilots - Scott Weiland was in Velvet Revolver last week... They say fired but with the STP revival, looks like it was in the works for a while. Doesn't he look like a cross between Michael Jackson and Freddie Mercury in this Picture?
There is also a more, so far unconfirmed, that Charlie the Unicorn will make an appearance!
There is an interesting fast moving prank on the web these days called Rick Rolling. Perhaps you have heard of it. Perhaps not. It goes like this a friend sends you a message with a link that - "OMG! You have to see this!" kind of message and the link goes HERE SO ahead click it - I'll wait...
You have now been Rick Rolled - taken against your will to a Rick Astley video from the mid 80's. Apparently the kids think this is hilarious and on April Fools Day there was much Rick Rolling going on worldwide.
Now, whenever I hear the name Rick Astley I am reminded of Nick Lowe's song "All Men are Liars" Which features these lyrics:
Do You remember Rick Astley?
He had a big fat hit it was ghastly.
He said I'm never gonna give you up or let you down,
Well I'm here to tell you that Dick's a clown.
Though he was just a boy when he made that vow,
I'll bet it all that he knows by now...
All Men, all men are Liars..."
The video is pretty amusing - And now, Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Nick Lowe!
You can get revenge and NICK-Roll the next person who Rick Rolls you by pointing then to This Page
New Rule: Just like IRA contributions you have until April 15th to post last year's "best of" lists.
Here is some of my favorite music from 2007.
Robert Plant Alison Krauss - Raising Sand - A great surprise and a true joy. "Please Read the Letter" was one of the finest vocal performances of the year.
Radiohead - In Rainbows - A brilliant return to form. It still isn't O.K. Computer but a heck of a lot closer than the last couple attempts.
Wilco - Sky Blue Sky - Jeff Tweedy rehabs and is happy to be alive., We're happy to hear that.
Bruce Springsteen - Magic - Two classics "Radio Nowhere" and "Girls in Their Summer Clothes"
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible - My affection for this CD rises and falls. When I love it - I REALLY love it.
The National - Boxer - Haunting brooding moody glorious.
The Shins - Wincing the Night Away - Pain with high harmonies - what a glorious combination.
Iron and Wine - The Shepherd's Dog Backed by Calexico this is almost trance inducing. In a good way.
Spoon Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga - This band continues to grow and evolve. Several brilliant tracks on this one.
LCD Sound-system - Sounds of Silver WOW! Unlike anything else ever. "North American Sum" is just the beginning.
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black Pray for her. This talent can not be squandered away. I hope.
Favorite Single or track
John Doe with Kathleen Edwards - "The Golden State" If it were not for Plant and Krauss THIS would have been duet of the year. Great song.
Runner Up - Band of Horses - "Is There a Ghost"
Favorite Personal Discovery - Manu Chao - It appears that the rest of the world already knew, but most of the US still doesn't. This guy is fantastic.
This video pulls off the unlikely trifecta of being hilarious, ingenius and oddly affecting.
I
The film opens with a GTO prowling the High School parking lot to “Sweet Emotion” and the last scene has a carload of kids at dawn heading to Houston
James Wendell Maudlin 1957-2008
We had the season's first snowfall earlier this week and traffic was a mess all over the region - very good for business!
But the real focus of this Winter Wonderland post is the new #1 Holiday favorite here at Dad's Car Radio. Fleming and John is a husband and wife duo based in Nashville. They have done a lot of studio work and released a couple of CD's on their own, but, so far, this is the only song of theirs I have heard.
It's a stunningly well done reworking of two classics. Enjoy!

Click the link and on most computers it will play right away - or you can right click and save it to your computer and then play it.
Here at Dad's Car Radio, we like to Rock and we like to Roll. In order to keep rolling while we are rocking, we avoid Traffic Jams any way we can and the Best way is to use traffic.com either via the web or via alerts sent directly to your mobile phone. Here's a look at Baltimore Traffic right now. Go ahead, click on it and check it out. Have I mentioned that I now work for Traffic.com?
Here's a pretty cool little web video project that someone out there in Internet land created. Thia guy went out and tracked down great images for all the events and people referenced in Billy Joel's 1980's hit "We Didn't Start the Fire" It's well done and worth a viewing. Enjoy!
Back in June I posted an article called "African Adventure" about a tremendous Adventure Travel article that appeared in the Africa issue of Vanity Fair - you can jump down and read that post if you like it's Here ,but at the time, the article was not up on the VF website, (or I couldn't find it) but it's there now.
Seriously, it's such a cool story - you have to go read it. I bought the music collection "Tracks in the Sand" which was compiled by Youssou N'Dour as an introduction to West African music for those of us who are not West African, and am listening to it tonight as I composed this post. It's like an expert mix tape - and ALL revenue not some bogus "net proceeds" - goes to the Global Fund.
This song, "Senegal Fast Food" by Amadou and Mariam (featuring Manu Chao) is from the collection. I can't stop listening to it. Just click on the link below to listen or download - then go buy your own copy of the entire "Tracks in the Sand" Collection via itunes and support the Global Fund. Amadou and Mariam are a blind couple from Mali and Manu Chao produced their most recent album and wrote and sings this song.

"Who is Brendon Urie?" None other than the lead singer of Panic! At the Disco, THE BAND that Chelsea was most excited to see at the Virgin Festival. Here's her report:
Chelsea: So Brendon, how do you like Baltimore?
Brendon: I like it but it’s been awhile since we’ve done a show here so I’m trying to get used to the humidity.
Chelsea: Is there anything you really like about Baltimore?
Brendon: We’re feeling kinda’ sick because we had like a thousand crab cakes but “crab cakes and football that’s what Maryland does”. Right?
Chelsea: Indeed. Do have anything special in store for the show today?
Brendon: Yeah, I think were gonna’ do a new song that’s going to be on our new album
Chelsea: Wow sounds like a real treat when does the album come out?
Brendon: About January of February of 2008.
Chelsea: I can’t wait. By the way, are really wearing that on-stage?
Brendon – My MOM gave me this shirt.
Chelsea: Oh - I LOVE it!
Brendon: Thanks, she sewed it, actually.
Chelsea: Sweet! Well it’s been good talking to you Brendon have a great show!
Brendon: Good talking to you too – can I have your phone number?
Dad: Interview's over, Brendon.
There were a number of human powered taxis roaming the festival. We hopped a ride with one on Saturday afternoon. "Take us to the misting tent, please". Watch as our driver almost runs over a guy on the path. The driver told us he had weighed himself before coming over that morning, was doing 10 hours ofHuman Taxi pedaling each day and then was going to weigh himself again.
Science!
This band was featured in an earlier post with the dancing mermaid and bunny rabbits. This is a bit longer and gives a bit more of the flavor of the music, which sounded wonderful and was a great way to recharge the psychic batteries before going back to the massive scenes at the big stages.
Enjoy.
Namaste.
As the sun set in the West and The Police took to the North Stage the center of the Pimlico infield featured a machine which blasted jets of fire into the twilight sky... Get in touch with your inner Beavis "Heh, heh, fire is cool!" By the way, that is not the moon in the sky, but an illuminated balloon.
Chelsea and I were checking out the Eco exhibits in the Green Spot when I noticed a TV camera and a boom microphone and a small circle of people just a few feet away. At the center of that circle was Sir Richard Branson. Stunned, I turned to Chelsea and said "That's Richard Branson!" She said "Who's that?" "Mr. Virgin", I replied... "get a picture"
I walked over and reached out my hand and introduced myself and THAT was my favorite Rock Star moment of the weekend - and perhaps my life. Chelsea snapped a couple of shots - but it was all so fast. This close up, she assures me was taken while he was shaking my hand.
Over in the Southwest corner of the infield was the GreenSpot with great hands on eco-exhibits, cool looking tents giant leaves to create some shady spots and a small stage. We had fled the North stage where the Beastie Boys were screaming and shouting and hip-hop beat-dropping and as we turned the corner Gail said "I hear a sitar!" We followed the sound to the GreenSpot stage where a band was playing Indian inflected cool vibe music that sounded a lot like Thievery Corporation. As it turns out at least one member of this group plays with Thievery Corporation from time to time. It was so cool - The EXACT opposite of the Beasties down at the other end of the field, relaxing, trance inducing, a perfect way to chill and recharge.
The band was International Velvet, they are based in DC and here's their My Space page.
The music drew and interesting and eclectic assortment of dancers...
The infield of the Pimlico Racetrack was once again transformed into the coolest village on Earth, with plenty to see and do beyond the 2 Main stages. There were surprises at every turn.
This "Emo-ade" stand was part of a conceptual art installation located near the North stage.
Up in the sky you can see a plane towing a banner promoting Ryland homes. It read "Ryland Rocks Balto" Nobody believed them. It just reeks of desperation and is such a forced fit into the event. How exactly, does a builder of mid-line houses "Rock Balto"? The money would have been better spent paying off a zoning commissioner to get another 20 town-homes on a chunk of farmland. Well, maybe, not better, but more effective.
Meanwhile back on the ground... There were several "recharge Domes scattered about the festival grounds. This one featured nice comfortable seats and FREE massages, plus samples of delicious Iced Yerba Mate in 3 delicious flavors. It's a fantastic organic herbal tea from Paraguay, all Fair Trade and good for you. We came Through here ate least 3 times and had all three flavors, but no massage, maybe on Sunday...
You used to have to go to the New York City subway to see this kind of art. In a couple of spots, groups of graffiti artists were creating murals.
In another tent was the Hon Salon, where you too could be teased up like a big haired Baltimore gal.
Note the string of pink flamingo lights... This is one of the stylists. I get the feeling Amy Winehouse has been to Baltimore before...
Amy Winehouse made it to the Festival... Just in time. I spoke to Rob Timm at WRNR who was supposed to interview her before her set, but she arrived so close to set time that there was no interview. So we will create one:
Rob: Amy, what's in the flask?
Amy: It's tea - HOT British tea, not that creepy iced Nestea crap you Yanks drink.
Rob: Earl Grey?
Amy: Johnny Walker.
Rob: ahhhh yes, wink wink nudge nudge know what cha' mean, 'deed I do, Luv.
Amy: Security!
Not a creature was stirring, except for Dad and his mouse. We are all going to the Virgin Music Festival by Virgin Mobile at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore tomorrow. Even Mom! She scammed a press pass via her employer, a local newspaper and has promised to blog the experience detailing the different viewpoints on music and popular culture between a teen age girl and a 50 year old adult. Wow - what a great idea!
Of course, Mom and I are most excited to see The Police, one of the great bands I always admired, but never saw. I have seen almost everyone I ever wanted to see, I was living in Queens when The Police played Shea Stadium, but didn't make the show. Shea sucks. Seriously. It was a terrible ballpark back in the early 80's - I hope they did some renovation since then.
Anyway, Chelsea is excited to see Fountains of Wayne who go on first at high noon, when the temperature should have already passed 90 on it's way to 95 with a decent chance of a thunderstorm.
The complete schedule is posted here - the worst conflict is The Police from 8-9:50 on the North stage and Modest Mouse from 8:45-10 on the South stage. Arrrrrgh. May have to skip the Encores and go see MM for a bit.
So, our planned itinerary is:
Fountains of Wayne
Cheap Trick - how the heck did they get on this bill anyway? We will most likely dash over to catch at least part of The Fratelli's set.
AmyWinehouse - she wraps up at 3PM - we'll skip Incubus and Paolo Nutinio and hit the Freak Lounge and other assorted diversions, and yes, I might be ready for a beer - or 12 - by then.
After that we'll be running back and forth between stages the rest of the day... Peter,Bjorn and John, LCD Sound System, Ben Harper, TV on the Radio, Beastie Boys and then The Police and Modest Mouse. Man, I better go get some sleep.
By the way - after a really loooong day in the sun, The Police will hit the stage right at sunset and should play "Bring on the Night" but it doesn't appear that they have been doing that one at all on the tour. But they should, damn it! It's not too late!
Get me Sting on the phone!

"Excellent Idea! We'll do it!"
We celebrated the 4th of July at home this year and we were glad we did as several waves of thunderstorms with torrential downpours rolled over the area during the evening hours. We sat on the porch and gave the neighbor children some sparklers and they ran around and delighted us with the mini pyrotechnic display.
Later, during yet another thunderstorm I recorded this ambient mix of the Thievery Corporation's "Universal Highness" from their first release "Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi". The original work is cool enough blending a trip-hop beat with African call and response singing and Miles Davis-esque trumpet bursts. This version was recorded on my mini digital recorder and adds heavy rainfall, distant thunder, a passing car or two and fireworks. No editing - this is exactly as we heard it on July 4th, 2007
It's really cool.
While I was out of the car, Chelsea, Megan and Mom played an impromptu game of "Guess that Ringtone"
What's on your cellphone?
Do you have differnt rings for differnt callers?
I have grown to love the audio caller id.
This is a short silly little podcast.
Download GuessThatRingtone.mp3
Enjoy!
